Calling The IRS

Calling the IRS is not one of those things that you will put in your list of the most straight forward things you can do …unfortunately it is not!

Also it is a well divulged fact on most media outlets that in time of budget crunch at the agency, this is one area that suffers greatly.

Some times during the process of financing your home you may need to get documents from the IRS – such as letter of award of benefits, SSI benefit or even to get  IRS transcripts from you most recent income tax returns

I once need to get a tax return transcript and even that my loan officer gave a number she believed that I could talked with a real person …it was not!

Overall it took me more than twelve (yes, 12!) hours of persistently – spread in two days - to follow many hotline numbers published on the internet and pursuing suggested number given to me by very knowledgeable folks, like my accountant, to finally unlock ‘the secret’ I am sharing on this page.

Calling The IRS …Talking With A ‘Real' Person

Now, here is a real ‘gem’ that I like a lot: for each subject that you may need from the IRS, there is a ‘specific’ number that you can get automatic info …and you may have two or three choices …however outside out of those limited choices you will be disconnected AND there is no way to connect with ‘thy olde fashioned operator’

More damaging – I could not find a directory either ..tried as I might ;- (

So calling the IRS and talking with a ‘real person’ is a whole different matter.

If you ever need to talk with a real person in the IRS, here is one of the hottest information I can provide – it took me two days and many dead end trials to finally come to these numbers:

Calling The IRS For Personal Matters

Calling IRS For PERSONAL tax return only= Not for Business

Dial – 1-800-829-1040 < == Please notice: 1040 is the form to file ‘personal income tax’ Cleaver! ;- )

  1. Then press 1 for English
  2. Then press option 2
  3. Then press option 1
  4. Then press option 3 = …AND be prepared to wait 30 to 45 minutes and thy shall speak with a real person :- )

VERY IMPORTANT: On this number, after the person that you will talk to has properly identified you to connect you with your account, she or he will be able to fax you the transcripts and whatever info on your account balance.

== > However you have to be by that fax machine, while you are on the phone!!! This is very important if not, they will not fax it! It seems that they person helping you needs to hear the fax ring!!!

== > Also important to notice that they believe that a ‘3rd party’ can ‘take a peek’ on your email, so IRS will NOT email your transcripts! …

Your fax will come with a disclosure that it too can have someone ‘listening in,’ but it seem that the IRS thinks that it is less likely, thus their willingness to fax your docs …interesting enough the ‘conspiracy theory’ that your emails can be spied on has made it all the to the highest level of the US Government ;- )

Calling The IRS For Business Matters

Calling IRS For Business accounts

Dial 1-800-829-0115

I am sorry that I did not keep notes of the options, however I found it to be much easier to connect with a real person == > Note that I said, easier NOT faster – but you will connect with a hot body on the other end

FYI - This more info on my page IRS Transcripts and you can get get a slew of info by visiting the IRS website

Best of luck!
